The 2016 Iowa State Fair kicked off Thursday and one of the final events is the 4-H Hall of Fame ceremony.
This year’s inductee from Greene County is the late Monica McGregor. She was a lifelong Greene County resident and dedicated 60 years of her life, until her passing in 2014. She began her 4-H career raising jersey cattle in Dawson Township. After she graduated from Dana High School, she was elected as the State Historian and was the 4-H leader for the Bristol Busy Bees 4-H Club.
She started the Youth Life Skills 4-H Club for kids who wouldn’t otherwise be involved in 4-H. She taught kids about the non-traditional 4-H activities and focused on communication and other life skills. She was the county coordinator for “R.A.V.E” now called “Share the Fun”.
Monica’s daughter, Sheilah McGregor Pound, shares her initial reaction when she found out that her mom was going to be inducted into the 4-H Hall of Fame.
“I said, ‘Wow, really?’ That’s basically what I said at first, then I was very humbled. Mom was a tremendous advocate for 4-H through all the years that she lived with us. So we were very excited and happy for her and it was well deserved.”
The ceremony will take place at the Exhibit Building on the fairgrounds in Des Moines at 1:30pm on Sunday, August 21st.
