The Guthrie County Board of Supervisors met Thursday.
The Board discussed necessary maintenance for the courthouse elevator, which has been in service since the building opened in 1964.
General Services employee Brandon Thompson says the maintenance, which will be performed by O’Keefe Elevator Company of Des Moines, could cause the elevator to temporarily be out of service. “What has to be done for the telephone in the elevator, and the door restrictor, is to have another cable from the control box to the car itself. They have to run a new wire for that, which is very time consuming, so the elevator could be out of service for three or four days.”
Because the elevator was built before 1975, it is required by the Iowa Elevator Safety Board to have those safety improvements and an escape hatch on top of the elevator car installed by May 1, 2020.
The Board instructed Thompson to get in contact with O’Keefe and get the maintenance scheduled to take place as soon as possible.
