When Mark Sawhill accepted the invitation to become the Greene County High School football teams’ offensive line coach for a second stint, he knew there would be challenges. The veteran of coaching those in the trenches had just one offensive lineman back with any starting experience from 2015, and the interior lacked depth. The Rams lost their season opener 34-0 on Aug. 26 in Carroll to Kuemper Catholic, but the coach saw some positives. The line opened holes well enough for Trey Tucker to rush for 90 yards and Jake Berns 85. At times the pass protection was solid, while it broke down for sophomore quarterback Clint Dennhardt at other times.

It’s going to be a process, but the coach has already seen improvement. “We’re working on mental preparation, knowing where we’re going. Then getting key steps and working on that footwork to make sure we get the right step because coming off that line you’ve got to get that first step against that defensive guy. We’ve worked a lot of footwork and  hand placement, while trying to keep it as simple as far as the blocking schemes go.”
