The Perry Bluejays football team moved to 2 – 0 after 21-14 victory over the Nevada Cubs at Dewey Field last night in Perry. Both teams struggled to score in the first half with penalties and turnovers bogging down the offenses and preventing each team from getting inside the opponents 20 yard line. Perry had two first half turnovers throwing one interception and losing one of two fumbles. Nevada also had two fumbles and lost one as well. After a scoreless half time break Nevada was able to get on the board first with 6:42 left in the 3rd quarter on a Preston Cattanach 25 yard TD run capping off an 8 play 58 yard drive. Perry didn’t waste any time responding tying up the score at 7 after a Janier Puente 14 yard catch from Adan Madina. The next possession Perry was able take advantage of a short field and punched it in again on a short strike from Madina to Connor Kenyon from 3 yards out putting Perry up 14-7 in the 3rd quarter. With 9:14 to go in the 4th quarter it was the Perry defense rising up and making a play to put the Bluejays on the board again with what proved to be the game’s winning score. Donald Chavez had a brilliant 36 yard interception return after picking off a Macade Matuska and was aided by a convoy of blockers to hit pay dirt and put the Bluejays up 21-7. The game wasn’t over though as Neveda narrowed the gap with under 5 minutes to play on a 1 yard touchdown run by Matuska which made it 21-14. Nevada’s comeback attempt wasn’t done yet, as the Cubs had the ball all the way down to the 5 yard line with under one minute to play but wound up going backwards to the 22 yard line with one last heave from Matuska that fell incomplete. Next week it will be a battle of undefeated teams as Perry hits the road to take on the Ballard Bombers.
