It was homecoming for the ADM Tiger football team as they kicked off the district part of their 2016 schedule on a rainy night in Adel last Friday. The Tigers were facing off against a Winterset squad also intensely searching for a W in the win column as both teams came into the night 0-2. The game would break a two year drought for ADM against Winterset and on homecoming the winds seemed to be in favor of the home town squad as ADM would be victorious 17-13
The action started off in an almost deja vu form as the Huskies jumped out to a quick first score taking to the end zone with 7 min 30 sec left in quarter number one off of a quarterback sneak from Noah Larson. As district play will do it didn’t take long before trick plays were involved as the Huskies attempted trickery for the extra point but the ADM defense would put a stop to that and the first lead of the game was a 6-0 score in favor of the Huskies.
The Tigers would take to the scoreboard in the second quarter marching 75 yards down the field spanning 8 plays capped off by Matthew Dobrzynski’s 1 yard TD run followed by a successful extra point to give ADM the lead 7-6. A fumble on the ensuing kickoff by Winterset gave ADM great field position to work with on the Husky 22 yard line. The Tigers did manage to put points on the board, this time in the form of a field goal increasing the Tiger lead 10-6 heading into half time.
While the third quarter brought a lot of excitement to the game it did not yield a score and it wouldn’t be until the 4th quarter when the scoring would pick back up. That’s when the Tigers would get their second scare of deja vu as despite a 4th down and their starting quarterback out a play, the Huskies uncharacteristically took to the air for a score to take back the lead via an 11 yard reception. That would earn the Huskies the lead once again at 13-10 at the 8:55 mark left in the ball game.
It would then be up to the home town Tigers to mount a comeback and they would do just that posting 123 of their 301 total yards in the fourth quarter alone. What turned out to be the game winning drive involved a pitch and catch from Sam McCartney to Austin Flora for a 67 yard gain entering deep into Winterset territory. That would be capped off with a 14 yard pass from Sam McCartney to Kade Barcus for the lead and the eventual game winner.
Sam McCartney continued to play great under center taking to the air 23 times, completing 15 passes for 241 passing yards, one interception, and one touchdown. He also continued to be a dual threat earning 34 yards on the ground. Matthew Dobryznski took to the running game earning 19 tough yards on 7 carries for one score. Leading the way on the receiving end was Austin Flora totaling 103 yards on 5 receptions. The Tigers would out dual the Huskies in offensive production totaling 301 yards compared to Winterset’s 165 total yards.
With the loss the Huskies fall to 0-3 on the season while the ADM Tigers improve their record to 1-2 on homecoming night. Next up for the ADM Tigers will be a district road match up at the now 3-0 Carrroll Tigers. The Tigers squared match up will commence at 7:30 next Friday and will be preceded by pregame coverage on K107.9 FM.
