Greene County is 0-3 on the football season heading to Webster City (2-1, 0-1) this week, but the Rams clearly made progress on the defensive side of the ball in last Friday’s 18-12 loss to Dallas Center-Grimes. After falling behind 10-0 on the Mustangs first two possessions of the game, the defense allowed just a touchdown and two-point conversion the rest of the night.
After losing 34-0 to Kuemper Catholic in Carroll and 42-19 in Harlan the first two weeks, the District 2 opener vs. the Mustangs was clearly the most competitive game so far for Coach Dean Lansman’s team. Greene County led 12-10 at the half and DC-G didn’t take the lead back until :18 were left in the third quarter.
The defensive allowed its fewest points (18) and yards (263) on Friday. They’ll be challenged this Friday night for the third road game in four weeks when the Rams play in Webster City (2-1, 0-1). The Lynx are coached by former Scranton High School coach Bob Howard, who’s had great success with the single wing offense utilizing a spin back. The Lynx rushed for over 800 yards in starting the season 2-0, but they dropped their district opener at Gilbert last Friday, 31-25.
Greene County at Webster City can be heard on KG98 and www.raccoonvalleyradio.com on Sept. 16 with coverage starting at 6:30 p.m. and kickoff at 7:30 p.m.
