More details have been released about the fatal shooting of 24 year-old Megan Sloss, of Guthrie Center, that occurred Sunday in Sac County.
According to the Sac County Sheriff’s office, Sloss and her brother, Spencer Sloss, of Guthrie Center, were riding together to a target shooting family function in Ida County. As Megan was driving, Spencer was riding in the passenger seat and the two were discussing how to tear a gun apart to clean it. Spencer was demonstrating the task with his Sig Sauer 9 mm handgun. During the demonstration, the gun discharged, with the bullet striking Megan in the hip region.
When Sloss was struck by the bullet, the vehicle was traveling at near highway speeds. Spencer Sloss reports climbing over the arm rest in order to stop the vehicle. He then called 9-1-1 and got his sister out of the car.
A doctor stopped at the scene to begin providing medical assistance. Sloss was then transported to Loring Hospital in Sac City, and later airlifted to Mercy Hospital in Des Moines, where she died a short time later.
The Sheriff’s office adds Spencer Sloss does have a valid permit to carry a firearm, issued out of Guthrie County. An autopsy for Megan Sloss was scheduled for Wednesday morning at the State Medical Examiner’s office in Ankeny.
The case remains under investigation by the Sac County Sheriff’s office and Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation.
