Greene County RamsThe Greene County Auditor’s office has released a breakdown of voting ages on the Greene County School District bond referendum election held earlier this month.

The majority of eligible voters ages 65 and older, represented the highest percentage of voters. They represented over 37 percent of the total ballots cast, compared to 41 percent in September of 2015, the first time the district tried to pass the bond. The lowest percentage were the 18 to 24 year-olds with almost 2.5 percent in 2015 and in 2016, it was just over three percent.

It was mentioned as the school board meeting earlier this month that the critical age range of voters were those 25 to 34 and 35 to 49 year-olds. While the number of votes did increase between the two elections, they only accounted for 24 percent in 2015 and increased slightly in 2016 to about 27 percent of the total ballots cast.

The $19.4 million bond failed to get a supermajority of votes of 60 percent, even though it achieved 53 percent approval. The School Board committee will be meeting with the Pay It Forward committee to discuss the next steps. Superintendent Tim Christensen says the earliest the bond could go back to the voters is next April.
