The Greene County School District recently applied for allowable growth funds for special education deficit.
Superintendent Tim Christensen says the School Board approved the application for $444,330 in special education funding. He points out that special education funding is different than regular school funding. The state supplemental aid per pupil funding is a year behind, following the certified enrollment figures released by school districts on October 1st. However, special education funding must be paid during the current school year.
“We potentially have new special education students that have one-on-one associates or different needs of that nature, that you’ve got to pay for this year but you don’t get the funds until next year. So it’s common for school districts to run a deficit in special education. The vehicle for that, you can tax back for that.”
The School Board approved an application to request funding to cover the deficit amount at their meeting last month.
