The moment that Greene County has been waiting for since 2014, artist Bubba Sorensen is in Jefferson this week to paint the Freedom Rock.
A Redfield resident, Sorensen is trying to paint a different Freedom Rock in all of Iowa’s 99 counties. Once he starts to paint the rock, it will take him about ten days to complete. There will be three themes on the rock. One is the Medal of Honor Flag, another is the motorcade for President Dwight D. Eisenhower when he came through the county on Old Highway 30 and the final theme is a salute to the National Guard Armory soldiers who were prisoners of war during World War II.
The rock will be unveiled on Thursday, October 27th at 4pm during a short ceremony. Then the Freedom Rock committee will host a fundraiser soup supper following in Clover Hall. All proceeds will be used toward completing the Freedom Rock project. Other plans include purchasing flags and flag poles and landscaping.
