During harvest time, more deer are on the move and there’s a high chance that they will cross different roadways.
Greene County Sheriff Steve Haupert recommends motorists hold true to the saying ‘Don’t veer for deer’.
“Statistics prove that it’s better that you stay on the straight path (and) stay in your lane. If you veer to the other lane and cause a major collision that’s on you or if you veer to the ditch you have a greater chance of being injured yourself. So just apply the brakes the best you can and take the hit.”
Haupert reminds everyone to be alert especially at night for deer along the roadway and if there’s one, there’s usually others behind it. A good indication is if a farm field is being harvested, there’s a good chance deer might jump out and cross the road.
