Jefferson residents are reminded that this week is fall clean up week.
Sanitation crews will be picking up extra materials for free today through Thursday and your normal garbage day.
City Administrator Mike Palmer says they will accept yard waste in 30-gallon biodegradable paper bags; tree trimmings and brush with the cut ends facing the curb; lumber and other construction debris; carpet and windows; furniture and regular garbage for free. Appliances that contain freon such as refrigerators and air conditioning units will incur a $40 per appliance charge and all other appliances will be a $25 fee.
Items that won’t be picked up include tires, whole trees and yard waste in plastic bags or in garbage cans.
Palmer points out that the program has been very successful.
“The last few years have been very, very good, people get things out by the curb. I know people like to get through and do a little scavenging and things get all thrown around. We know a lot of times that’s not the fault of the property owner, they maybe had it nice and neat. But the biggest thing is to try and keep your piles as neat as they can, that way it really avoids any extra charges.”
Each resident receives two free hopper loads and anything beyond that will be a $25 charge. A hopper load is the backend of a garbage truck.
Residents are reminded to get their garbage items to the curbside by 6am to ensure pick up.
