Greene County SheriffA Grand Junction teen escapes his vehicle before it catches on fire following a two vehicle accident Saturday.

Greene County Sheriff Steve Haupert says at 5:02pm a deputy and the Grand Junction Fire and Rescue unit responded to a two vehicle crash at the intersection of T Avenue and 250th Street.

A sixteen year-old from Grand Junction was traveling south on T Avenue when his 2003 Chevrolet Impala was hit by a westbound 2007 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 pickup truck that was driven by 52 year-old Jon Wade Leonard of Carroll. The Impala ended up in the southwest ditch of the intersection and Leonard helped the teen get out of the vehicle. A short time later fuel from the vehicle ignited, catching it on fire.

The teen suffered a minor knee injury from the accident, while Leonard was uninjured. The Impala was considered to be a total loss and the pickup truck that was also hauling an H and H Trailer sustained major, disabling damage.

The accident happened at an uncontrolled intersection and Leonard was cited for failure to yield to the right.
