Monday night was the official start of the inaugural season for ACGC Lady Charger basketball. A new team under the direction of new head basketball coach James Blythe starting off their 2016-17 season on their home court taking on Audubon high school.
The season opener didn’t quite go as planned for the Lady Chargers as they fell to a solid Audubon team by the final tally of 40-27. It was tough sledding right from the get-go for coach Blythe and his team who never breached double digit scoring in any one quarter Monday. The Charger defense held Audubon in check for the first and fourth quarters, but it was the middle two quarters where the ACGC defense allowed Audubon to score over 62% of their total points.
The game started out slow for both teams ending in a 8-5 first quarter score and ending the first half with the Lady Chargers down 19-10. It was Audubon’s big 14 point third quarter that really started to put some space between them and ACGC. The Lady Chargers were unable to answer with a big comeback in the final quarter putting up just 9 fourth quarter points and falling 27-40.
Junior Madison Berger led the way in total points on the night earning 12 of the team’s 27. She led the team with 5/8 field goals made while contributing the only two three point buckets the Chargers made throughout the game. Leigan Laughery had a solid night as well going 3-6 from field goal range while bringing down 10 total rebounds.
ACGC will look to rest and reset for their next match up which takes them on the road to Madrid high school next Tuesday. Game time tip off for that game is scheduled for 6:00 pm.
