Perry’s five starters proved that they might be the best conditioned team in the Raccoon River Conference Tuesday night during their season opening victory over Newton 60-56. The starting combination of Molly Lutmer, Grace Stewart, Grace Marburger, Emma Olejniczak and Johanna Diw took only 48 seconds off on average the entire game playing virtually the entire 32 minute game. The strategy worked as Perry led from start to finish in knocking off the Cardinals by 4.
Perry opened up an early 9 point lead after hitting 3 of their first 4 shots. Freshman Molly Lutmer hit her first varsity shot which was a 3 pointer to push Perry out to an 11-2 lead. The Jayettes kept that single digit lead all the way through halftime and spread it out to 51-39 early in the 4th quarter. Newton battled back going on a 9-0 run to make it a one possession game for the final 2 minutes. Diw hit 5 of 6 from the free throw line down the stretch while Marburger was 12 of 19. The Jayettes finished 22-37 from the free throw line while Newton closed just 7-15.
Marburger led the Perry offense with 30 points while Diw chipped in 17. Lutmer was impressive in her debut as she tallied 8 points. Olejniczak provided 5 points including a key 3 pointer late in the second half after Newton had tied the game.
Perry starts 1-0 while Newton falls to 1-2.
