Greene County High School has a number of seniors on its boys’ basketball team. Returning letter winner Calvin Skalla is among that group. He saw saw varsity time a season ago and said he got a lot better in practice having to guard three-time all-conference player Trey Tucker every day in practice. “I got in (varsity games) every once in a while and when I got in I made the most of it.” New head coach Chris Nelson has an emphasis on defense and Skalla talks about being a good defender. “You’ve got to be able to move your feet and not play with your hands. Just get in front of him so he can’t get to the hoop and make sure he can’t put the ball in the hoop.”

What is the offensive role Skalla sees for himself? “Maybe more of a three with the two Treys (Tucker and Hinote) at the guards. Spot up, hit the jumpers. Drive and hit Wade (Adcock) down low, or kick out to Tommy (Jacobsen) and the rest out in three-point land.”

Skalla and his teammates open the season this Monday, Nov. 28 with a non-conference game  vs. Ogden in the middle school gym in Jefferson as part of a girl/boy doubleheader. The girls play at 6 p.m. with the boys to follow. Coverage on KG98 and www.raccoonvalleyradio.com begins at 5:45 p.m.
