With each passing day it means one day closer to the start of the 2016-2017 season for the West Central Valley Wildcat wrestling team.
New head wrestling coach Ethan Calvert intends on continuing the prideful tradition of Wildcat wrestling that sent 4 wrestlers to the district meet and one to the state meet. The Wildcats have shown an aggressive style of wrestling that is quite effective and one which coach Calvert looks to form into a more controlled style.
Coach Calvert spoke with Raccoon Valley Radio on the fine line between being and aggressive team and being a team that is too aggressive.
“It’s one of those things that we worked on all last week like being aggressive but being aggressive while being under control because you can’t be too aggressive because if your too aggressive you’re going to get yourself out of position. We focus a lot on staying in position while being aggressive and physical at all times because we’re always trying to score points. One of the biggest things when we train them to be more aggressive, sometimes they get themselves out of control and the biggest thing is trying to keep it reigned in to where you have enough aggression to where your’re being physical and you’re going after the guy but at the same time you don’t want to make mistakes by coming too hard or do certain things that would get yourself out of position and give up points. It’s a fine line and right now we’re dancing with it,” explained coach Calvert.
It’s officially t-minus six days until the aggressive Wildcat style of wrestling is put back on display for a new season. The Wildcats will take the short drive to Guthrie Center onto the home mats of the ACGC Chargers and will be joined by East Union and Nodaway Valley high schools. The meet will kick off at 6:00 pm.
