The Greene County and Paton-Churdan School boards met in a joint session Wednesday.
Both boards addressed concerns about communication between the districts. Paton-Churdan Principal Annie Smith thought that communication was the weakest point for both districts. To improve the lines of communication, Smith has been invited to the Greene County School District administrative meetings that are held once a week.
Greene County School Board member Ashley Johnston brought up the topic about possibly being one school district for the county. Paton-Churdan School Board member Dennis Tilley said he didn’t have a problem of someday being a combined school district, as long as the students are provided with the best educational opportunities. P-C Superintendent Kreg Lentsch said it’s more common for smaller districts to combine, not because of funding issues, but because of declining enrollment.
The boards then discussed sharing opportunities. A few teaching positions were discussed that could possibly be shared in the future. A band instructor, along with a science instructor could be shared. Smith suggested that both districts look to each other first to share positions before looking elsewhere. As far as athletics, the boards also addressed sharing track. Lentsch noted that in the near future, they may bring the idea of sharing track due to it being one of the hardest sport programs to get students to participate in.
The boards agreed to meet twice per year. Once as full boards in November and again as sub-committees in June. The next joint meeting is scheduled for June 28th.
