The start of the 2016-2017 season couldn’t be any sweeter for the West Central Valley Wildcat wrestling team after they marched into Guthrie Center last night for their season opening meet and came away without a loss.

The Wildcats squared off against East Union, Nodaway Valley, and the host ACGC Chargers for their first meet of the season.

Starting with the match up against Nodaway Valley, the Wildcats had a strong showing to defeat the Wolverines 37-24. The victory came on the heels of 5 wins by forfeit, a 9-1 Major Decision win by Riley Algreen, and an 8-6 overtime for Cole Sackett.

Squaring off against East Union the Wildcats did a lot of the same as they snatched a win away from the Eagles 45-36. Of West Central Valley’s 8 wins in that match up, 5 came via forfeit, 2 by fall, and one by decision. The win by decision came from Jason Mayland who won by a 7-5 decision. The two wins by fall came at the hands of Riley Algreen (2:50) and Quest Brown (3:49).

The third match up for the Wildcats was a Guthrie Center showdown with the newly formed ACGC Chargers. In that contest the Wildcats earned their way to a 45-28 victory over the Chargers. 8 wins in all by West Central Valley in that contest, 4 came from victories by fall, 3 from forfeit, and there was one win by decision. The four wins by fall belonged to Cole Sackett (1:46), Dylan Hommer (2:48), Riley Algreen (2:57), and Justin Garcia (3:07). The win by decision came from a showdown of returning state qualifiers and the slim victory went in favor of Tye Joint 2-1.

The Wildcats are now 3-0 to start off the young season with a quick turnaround to follow as they take to the road once again tomorrow, this time heading to the Woodward Granger tournament. That tournament will start at 9:30 am from Woodward-Granger high school.
