We have more information on a house fire that claimed the life of a child in Greene County, northwest of Perry Thursday morning.

The Jefferson, Rippey, Perry and Grand Junction Fire departments, the Greene County Sheriff’s office, Grand Junction Rescue and Greene County Emergency Medical Services responded to the two-story house fire at 8:22am at 2488 337th Street.

Jefferson Fire Chief Jack Williams tells Raccoon Valley Radio a four year-old boy was upstairs in his room, the mother and a baby were inside on the first floor of the home and an adult male was sitting outside on the front porch when the fire started. The ten year-old child was at school and the father was at work. The mother, baby and adult male made it outside of the home safely, but the four year-old didn’t make it out. The mother attempted to get to her child, but the home was filled with too much smoke and flames. The four year-old died in the fire and his name hasn’t been officially released, pending family notification.rippey-house-fire-pic-2

Williams says when crews arrived on scene, the home was fully engulfed in flames and a nearby propane tank was purging and shooting gas out of it and so crews had to wait until the tank was cooled off to prevent an explosion.

The home was a total loss and one vehicle sustained severe fire damage. According to the Greene County Assessor’s office, the deed to the home at that address belongs to Anthony Moore.

The State Fire Marshal’s office is assisting in the investigation, but officials don’t believe foul play played a role in the fire. Williams notes that they will return to the scene tomorrow to determine a cause of the fire.

Raccoon Valley Radio will bring you more information as it becomes official.
