Greene County’s Shop With A Cop program enters its second year this holiday season.

The program is designed to allow less fortunate children the opportunity to shop for Christmas presents for their families with law enforcement. Greene County Peace Officers Association President Jack Williams explains why they wanted to start a program like this last year.

“It’s just a good way for the Jefferson Police Department and the (Greene County) Sheriff’s office to get to know the younger kids and also help them out. There are a lot of families in Greene County that are in need of assistance and seeing other agencies start it,  and do it and how much fun they were having with it, we decided last year to give it a shot.”

Last year, ten kids were involved and this year, Williams notes that they have selected 15 kids after receiving an anonymous donation check earlier this year for $2,000, doubling their amount that they had last year.

Police Chief Mark Clouse recalls his experience of being involved with Shop With A Cop last year.

“It was a great time to get out with the kids and help them pick things out for now only their family members but themselves. It’s very rewarding to us as deputies and officers to be able to be part of a program like this to give back to our community. We just had a great time.”

This year program will take place tomorrow in Jefferson.
