The Perry basketball teams traveled to Carlisle Friday night trying to steal a pair of Raccoon River road wins but came up short with the Wildcats surging in the 4th quarter of both games beating the Jayettes 56-38 and defeating the Jays 64-51. Carlisle started fast and ended strong dominating the 1st and 4th quarters outscoring Perry a combined 81-33.
Despite the strong start from the Wildcats and 6’2″ Freshman Meredith Hoffman, who had 8 first quarter points, the Jayettes stormed back and played one of their most impressive defensive and shooting quarters in the second. Lock down defense on Carlisle’s Hoffman and standout jack of all trades Agatha Beier, while Perry Freshman Molly Lutmer sparked the Jayettes offense with 2 three’s along with another from Johanna Diw, to help pull Perry within two at the half, 22-20. The Wildcats pulled away in the second half with a 7 point end of 3rd quarter lead ballooning in the 4th, settling at 18 to end the game. The Jayettes starting five played played all but about 2 minutes of the first three quarters. The Wildcats were led by Hoffman’s 13 fourth quarter points, giving her 27 to lead all scorers. Lutmer led the way for the Jayettes scoring 13, followed by Diw’s 11 to go with her team leading 8 rebounds. Carlisle improves to 5-0, 1-0 in conference play and the Jayettes suffer their second loss in a row falling to 4-2, 1-1 in conference.
Carlisle scored 23 points in both the 1st and 4th quarters on their way to victory in their first Raccoon River Conference competition. After coming up empty on every first quarter field goal attempt the Jays trailed by 17 after one, Perry outscored the Wildcats 23-8 in the second to pull within 3 at the half trailing 31-28 at intermission. The Blujays’ comeback was led by Kyle Nevitt’s 12 point explosion including two three pointers. Perry was handcuffed early in the second half as both big men, Nevitt and Janier Puente went to the bench in foul trouble, yet the Bluejays only trailed by 1 at the end of the 3rd, 41-40. Sophomore Collin Liser led Carlisle with 23 points en route to to the 13 point Wildcat win. The Bluejays Rashon Ivory tried to take on a larger role in the absence of his two big guns and helped lead Perry offensively with 13 points along with Connor Nielsen who matched Nevitt’s 12. Carlisle improves to 1-1 on the season and Perry falls to 0-3, 0 and 2 against Raccoon River Conference opponents.
The Bluejays and Jayettes will bus to Norwalk on Tuesday, Raccoon Valley Radio coverage will begin at 5:45 on AM 1310 and the new 99.7 FM KDLS.
