This past Friday the ADM Tiger wrestling team were on the road to square off in the Battle Of Waterloo. It was an extremely tough field yielding 12 top then ranked teams yet through it all, coach Justin Schmauss and his Tiger team earned a very solid showing.
The Tigers where placed inside Bracket C to start things off with a rematch from last year’s Battle Of Waterloo against Denver-Tripoli. Unfortunately for the Tigers they would fall in their second bout against Denver-Tripoli in their opening contest 45-21. Sophomore Andrew Flora picked up where he left of last season in Waterloo picking up his 13th win on the season as one of five wrestlers to pick up wins in that match. Still inside Bracket C, the Tigers path would not get any easier as they would take on class 2A’s 10th ranked Clear Lake high school. Six wins in all for the Tigers against Clear Lake; 3 wins by fall, 2 wins by decision, and one technical fall. In all ADM would loose to Clear Lake by the final score of 36-28.
For the Tigers what was left was a match up against a solid Pleasant Valley squad whom ADM would take a win away from 51-30. The win came on the heels of nine wins total against Pleasant Valley. 4 came by way of fall (Hopewell, Harsh, Buse, Johnston), 4 came by forfeit (Flora, Holm, Sutton, Craigmaile), and one win by decision (Tauke 10-8).
In pool play the Tigers were located in a very tough Pool 7. The first action for the Tigers in Pool 7 play was against Waterloo West and ADM would take care of business coming out victorious 58-18. The Tigers took 11 wins total against Waterloo West, 8 of which came by way of fall, Andrew Flora and Chris Johnston earning wins by decision, with Bryce Holm taking a win by way of injury to his opponent. The Tigers then stuck with a Waterloo opponent for their second match in pool 7, this time against Waterloo East high school. ADM earned 6 wins total in that match, 5 by way of fall and one by way of forfeit, but they would unfortunately fall in a tough contest 43-36. In their final match up in pool play the Tigers found themselves up against yet another strong opponent in Independence high school. Andrew Flora led the charge and showed off his 7th place ranking in the latest top ten polls by taking another victory to end the tournament without a loss. The Tigers had four wins in all against Independence; Andrew Flora with a win by fall in the 1:45 mark with 145 lb Caleb Buse winning by fall in the 1:33 mark. Two major decision wins were also added with 138 lb Nolan Harsh 11-2 and 132 lb Hogan Hopewell with a 13-3 win.
The Tigers will now have a lengthy resting period period for the rest of 2016 as the next time they hit the mats competitively will be inside the new year with their first home meet of the season welcoming in Dallas Center-Grimes for a meet on January 5th. The Tigers will be honoring the seniors with senior night as they kick off their first meet of the new year at 6:30 pm from ADM high school.
