Over the course of his career in law enforcement, Greene County Sheriff Steve Haupert has seen lots of changes.
Haupert describes one of the most disappointing parts of being in law enforcement for as long as he has been.
“Thirty years ago when society kind of conducted things a little differently. We kind of policed ourselves. If it was a fence dispute or an animal dispute, we went over a cup of coffee and said, ‘Hey let’s get this figured out.’ It doesn’t work that way anymore. Those of us who are a little older have to just keep from getting discouraged about the way things used to be and realize that it’ll never be that way again.”
However, Haupert tells Raccoon Valley Radio he will miss working with different people in the county, especially those in the Sheriff’s office.
“Everybody’s been willing to pitch in. If someone’s sick, and they’ll say, ‘I’ll cover this shift or half of this shift. The next dispatcher will come in and cover the other half and the same way with jail (staff) and everybody just been really great to work with. You know when you have good people, that’s when things go pretty well.”
