Just before Christmas the Greene County wrestling team received a present in the form of a second home meet this season. Coach Mark Sawhill’s varsity Rams were scheduled to be at home in the middle school gym in Jefferson just once the entire season and after the Dec. 15 triangular with Saydel (Des Moines) and Nevada, everyone thought it was “one and done” for home meets. But inclement weather wiped out quite a few tournaments scheduled for Dec. 17, and once that happened, Activities Director Dean Lansman and Head Wrestling Coach Mark Sawhill went to work. The result is a Tuesday, Jan. 3 quadrangular in the middle school gym in Jefferson with Belmond-Klemme, Denison-Schleswig, and Ft. Dodge St. Edmond. Starting time is 5:30 p.m. and although few, if any, of the four teams are expected to fill all 14 weight classes, with three dual meets for every team, there should be some worthwhile mat time for the wrestlers.
Next week will have a pair of new events in it for the Rams. In addition to the home quad on the 3rd, the Rams wrestle for the first time in the Friday, Jan. 6 North Polk quadrangular in Alleman. The Comets will host the Rams, Grinnell, and Waukee in a rare Friday night meet for the Rams, which results in another rarity; a Saturday in January off!
