At the beginning of every year, the Greene County Supervisors begin their budget process for the upcoming fiscal year that starts in July.
One part of the budgetary process is allowing different organizations to ask for funding for different programs or services throughout the year. Chair John Muir thinks it’s a great opportunity for the organizations to receive funding from the County for providing worthwhile services.
“A lot of them don’t have a lot of funding sources, they don’t generate a revenue, per say, for themselves. It’s a, I think privilege for us to sit here and be able to help a lot of these organizations.”
Even though the requests do impact the overall budget for the County, Muir points out that they try to help each organization that makes a formal request.
“I think we’ve always funded them at some degree. They’re all very eloquent in their request and very thankful for what we’re able to do. So it’s one of the tougher things is breaking down the numbers and deciding this is how much we can give here and still provide a service for the residents.”
The Supervisors typically meet twice per week at the beginning of the year until mid-February to allow for organizations to make their requests and submit the County’s budget by March 15th to the state.
