One losing streak continued while another ended in Jewell on Friday night in Heart of Iowa Activities Conference girls’ basketball. Greene County lost for the ninth time in a row to fall to 3-14 overall and 2-10 in the conference while South Hamilton stopped a 12-game skid in conference play and is now 2-14 overall and 1-12 in the HOIAC. The Hawks led all but the first couple of minutes en route to a 45-31 victory over the Rams. The game was broadcast on KG98 and streamed on www.raccoonvalleyradio.com.
SH entered the game shooting 23% from the floor overall and 17% from three-point range, but they made five three-pointers for the game and made half their first half shots and that was enough. SH went eight of 17 from the foul line and was led in scoring by Anna Moss with 15 points and Bree Hodnefield with 14. They normally combined for less than 12 points per game, but had 29 combined vs. the Rams.
Greene County lost leading scorer Kenna Marquardt in the second quarter to an apparent knee injury. Junior Laurin Lyons led the Rams with 12 points and no one else had more than five. The Rams had 23 turnovers, and endured a long field goal drought in the third and fourth quarters. Trailing 24-18 at halftime, Coach Dean Lyons’ team made the first five points of the third quarter and were within 24-23 with 6:00 to play in the third period. They did not make another field goal until well into the fourth quarter and the Hawks slowly pulled away.
