The manner in which postseason boy’s basketball seedings are determined is going through its first test this week. Unlike in previous seasons, the Iowa High School Athletic Association’s board of control last July announced that coaches will determine the seedings in their respective districts and substates.
Perry boys basketball coach Dennis McDonnell traveled to Boone last night to meet with the other 7 head coaches assigned to the substate 2 pod released late last month. Previously, only teams’ win-loss records in games one through fifteen determined seeding position. Now, all games will be considered, and it will be the coaches’ responsibility to seed teams in those meetings like the one McDonnell went to in Boone last night.
Perry will be competing in what appears to be a very balanced substate 2. Entering Tuesday night’s games, Webster City had the best record at 14-3, followed by both Boone and Dallas Center Grimes with 12-5 marks. Greene County and Gilbert were each 11-6 while Perry sat 10-6. Ballard and Humboldt were the only teams with sub .500 records. During last night’s meeting, the 8 seeds were determined. Brackets will be released later today.
