The sport of wrestling is certainly a very unique sport. It’s a hybrid that involves both team and individual play. Unlike sports such as basketball or football, the individual aspect is much more prominent in wrestling yet whenever you’re around the sport especially during a dual meet, the word team has never had more meaning.

The aspect of team is always present in the sport of wrestling and not even the individual oriented postseason can deter that. One of the many teams that embody that mindset is the West Central Valley Wildcat wrestling team. Although the Wildcats just missed out on dual team regionals, head coach Ethan Calvert and his Wildcat wrestlers still march on towards the district 7 tournament in Underwood as a team.

While West Central Valley only has six individuals moving on to district play, it’s all hands on deck for the Wildcats to help those six which goes to show the theme that coach Calvert bestowed upon his team speaking with Raccoon Valley Radio.

“I’d say our biggest theme, even though post season is mostly individual, is team first and family. We really see ourselves as a wrestling family and we’ve got guys who are coming in, working out and doing the things they have to do to help everybody else out. It’s a team effort and that’s one of the big things, it’s a team first mentality and by extension because of that it’s going to make all the individuals better overall,” explained coach Calvert.

For now the team will be helping the likes of Quest Brown (113 lbs), Tye Joint (138 lbs), Cole Sackett (152 lbs), Riley Algreen (182 lbs), Carsen Schneller (195 lbs), and finally Alex Wells (285 lbs). The district 7 tournament in Underwood starts Saturday at noon.
