Class 2A District 8 wrestling in Webster City saw Greene County and Woodward-Granger from the Raccoon Valley Radio listening area both send wrestlers to State. First and second place finishers in each weight class advance to the State Tournament in Des Moines Feb. 16-18. Raccoon Valley Radio and www.raccoonvalleyradio.com will carry State matches “live” and play-by-play all three days.
The first from the two teams to qualify for State was W-G junior Austin Scharlau (40-16) at 152 lbs. He finished second to Jaden Kampen of Humboldt and by rule, did not have to wrestle back since he defeated the consolation match winner in the first round.
At 182, Tanner Vermass of W-G improved to 45-2 by winning both matches and claiming the district title. He won by fall in 1:06 in round one, and was a 7-0 winner over Mason Carpenter of CGD in the finals.
Freshman Cody Fisher from W-G is also a district champion and he improved to 43-5 with a pair of falls, including a pin in 1:40 in the title match vs. Caleb Olson of Webster City.
Greene County will send senior Hunter Ruth to the State tournament after he won both matches and improved to 30-3. Ruth won by fall in the opening round and topped tenth ranked Dominick Etherington of Algona in the finals by a 5-1 score, but it wasn’t decided until a Ruth takedown with one second remaining.

106- Garrett Tasler lost by fall :53 to Eric Fought Clear Lake; lost by fall 1:o2 to Austin Case, Garner-Hayfield-Ventura; fourth place.
182- Isaiah Yoder lost 6-4 to Mason Carpenter, Clarion-Goldfield-Dows; won 113-2 major decision over Philip Minkler, Poki; third place.
220- Hunter Ruth- won by fall 2:55 over Tim Elliott, Poki; won 5-1 over Dominick Etherington, Algona; first place.
Woodward-Granger:
145- Gabriel Yingst lost 15-0 technical fall to Ryan Leisure, Clear Lake; lost 8-3 to Elijah Torres, Humboldt; fourth place.
152- Austin Scharlau won 6-4 over Dakota Hennigar, Clarion-Goldfield-Dows; lost 5-2 to Jaden Kampen, Humboldt; no wrestle back, second place.
182- Tanner Vermaas won by fall 1:06 over Philip Minkler Poki; won 7-0 over Mason Carpenter, Clarion-Golfield-Dows; first place.
195- Cody Fisher won by fall 3:36 over Dalton Mennenga, Clear Lake; won by fall 1:40 over Caleb Olson, Webster City; first place.
Clarion-Goldfield-Dows won the team title with 99. 5 points and Webster City was a close second at 96. Humboldt placed third with 69 points, followed by Pocahontas Area/Lauren-Marathon 52, Woodward-Granger 50, Clear Lake 45.5, Algona 44, Southeast Valley (Gowrie) 42, Greene County 27, Garner-Hayfield-Ventura 20, Roland-Story (Story City) 14, and Forest City 0.
