Perry High SchoolMore than 1,000 people are expected in Perry this weekend for the 34th annual Perry Band Olympics.

Recognized as one of the largest solo and ensemble contests in the Midwest, the contest gives high school students the opportunity to perform in front of an elite panel of judges from colleges and universities across the state.

Perry Band Director Brandon Weeks says in addition to the educational opportunity for students and entertainment for the public, the event also serves as a fundraiser.

“Depending on concession and gate money, we can make $3,000 to $10,000 in profit that we can turn around and we will invest that back into the band directly for next year.  Of course, band is expensive.  We know that education budgets are tight all across Iowa right now, so any money we make is just more opportunities for students to have.”

Doors open bright and early at 6:30am with the performances starting at 8am and an awards ceremony around 3:30pm.  Gate admission is $3 and the event is open to the public.
