Predictions were made prior to Greene County taking on Dallas Center-Grimes on Monday night in a Class 3A District 15 boys’ basketball opening round contest at DC-G High School’s Meadows Gym, just like they are for every game. Many predicted DC-G, the larger school from a much bigger conference, would win, which they did. What no one could have prognosticated was that Greene County would trail by just 32-28 at halftime, then go the entire third quarter and then some without a single point. By the time the Rams finally got on the second half scoreboard, they trailed by 23 points. That 19-0 second half run was more than enough to carry the Mustangs on their home floor by a final of 66-36. Both teams emptied their benches before the contest was over.
Senior Trey Tucker and sophomore Trey Hinote entered the game scoring 41 points per game between them, but on Monday night they had just 11, and Tucker had all of those. He did not score in the second half and fouled out with 6:16 remaining in the game after going four of eight from the field with three three-point goals. Hinote was zero for five, and the Rams were 12 for 35 as a team. They also were cold from the foul line at three for 10, and were hit with two technical fouls, both in the disastrous third period. The Rams had not been assessed a “T” in any of their first 21 games. Senior Thomas Jacobsen had eight points and junior Wade Adcock added seven. Greene County turned the ball over 12 times.
DC-G made 22 of 39 shots from the floor including six of 15 from three-point range. The were 16 of 21 shooting free throws and had 10 turnovers. Senior Trevor Grove had 18 points with 15 from junior Steve Borneman and 11 by junior Tanner Epple.
The Rams end the season at 14-8 while the Mustangs advance at 13-9 and will play Ballard (Huxley) on Thursday night in Grimes for the District 15 title.
