Snowboarders and spectators gathered at the Midway Motel for the first annual Midway Motel Rail Jam Guthrie Center Saturday. A rail jam challenges riders to build up speed while approaching rails and other obstacles, sliding along them and performing tricks, before landing cleanly on the other side. After two hours of intense competition, Ryan Franzen of Dubuque, currently a student at Iowa State and a member of the Cyclone snowboarding team walked away with the top spot. Matt Fronapple, who organized the contest considers the first showing a success and is already planning next year’s offering. Franzen will be competing in national competition in March and said he was happy to use the contest to sharpen his skills.
