Greene County held its annual Wrestling Awards Night and Potluck Supper on Tuesday night in the middle school gym in Jefferson. Senior Hunter Ruth was named Most Valuable Wrestler. Ruth finished in the top 12 at the Class 2A portion of the State Tournament at 220 lbs. at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines. He finished with a 31-5 record and among his tournament titles were the Heart of Iowa Activities Conference, the Humboldt Sectional, and Webster City District.
Ruth and Isaiah Yoder (182 lbs.) were the only seniors on the team, and both became four-time letter winners. Three-time letter winners are juniors Cayden Gerdes and Isaac Ireland. Juniors Dale Morlan, Britton Gallagher, and Caden Wilson, lettered for the first time. Sophomore Brock Wuebker and freshmen Braden Gallagher, Garrett Tasler, Will Hansen, Joel Ward, Gage Michaelson, and Markus Rosenow, were also first time letter winners.
Managers lettering were Kylie Angell, Mariah Durlam, Brianna Ferguson, Andrea Salvin, and Summer Smith. Cheerleaders lettering were Gwen Black, Harleigh Wier, Abby Kozal, Tieryn Tucker, and Bailey Monthei.
Captains were Ruth, Yoder, Gerdes, and Ireland. Other awards presented and the recipients were: Aaron Beaman Award (Most improved varsity wrestler)- Britton Gallagher; Brad Badger Award (Mr. Determination)- Gerdes; Jake Taggart Award (Mr. Hustle)- Gerdes; Fred Watson Award (Inspirational)- Yoder; Outstanding freshman- Tasler; Outstanding sophomore- Wuebker; Logan Scheuermann Award (Outstanding JV wrestler)- Gage Michaelson; Most Improved JV wrestler- Rosenow; Super Booster Award- Greg and Marilee Ruth.
The Rams were able to fill most of the 14 weight classes, which helped them go from zero dual meet wins in 2015-16 to nine wins this season. The team finished in fourth place in the HOIAC tournament, and was also 4-4 in conference dual meets.
