Greene County Medical Center and Medicap Pharmacy of Jefferson have teamed up to purchase a new receptacle for disposal of unwanted or expired prescription drugs.

The MedSafe is located in the main lobby of the medical center and it is designed to accept anyone’s unwanted or expired prescription and over-the-counter medications, sample medications, prescription ointments and patches, vitamins and pet medications. Items that aren’t accepted include aerosol cans, needles or sharps, as well as non-prescription ointments, lotions or liquids.

Over 66 percent of the population doesn’t know what to do with their unwanted or expired drugs, so medical center Pharmacy Director Bonnie Orris and Medicap Pharmacy owner Bill Monroe wanted to have a place where those items could be collected all year round. The medical center and Medicap Pharmacy will cost share the annual expense of the receptacle.
