Two Greene County residents accused of poaching a deer recently received their judgements in court.
According to court documents, 41 year-old Brett Daryl Cranston pled guilty to a misdemeanor charge for trespass and two citations for prohibited hunting near a building or feedlot and restrictions on taking game. He was originally charged with three counts of trespass and 19 citations from the Department of Natural Resources. Cranston shot at a running deer on December 10, 2016 on private property, without the owner’s consent. He eventually walked onto someone else’s property to collect the deer that had died.
Cranston was also ordered to pay a $8,000 civil penalty for liquidated damages for taking the deer, along with fines and surcharges for the citations. He will also lose his hunting privileges for one year and forfeited the deer and firearm his used in the incident.
A second suspect, 42 year-old Jeremiah John Pedersen was ordered to pay a $65 fine after pleading guilty to a misdemeanor for trespassing, as well as a fine from the Department of Natural Resources for not having a hunting license.
