The Iowa House recently passed a bill that would change the process of the verification process to vote at the polls.
District 47 Representative Chip Baltimore says the voter modernization act would require electronic voter books and lists for county auditor’s and poll workers to utilize to verify an individual’s identification when they vote at their polling location. The bill also requires the voter to have a form of identification on them to be scanned before they vote, including a new voter ID card.
“We already have voter registration cards, but this would be a similar form of that, that would be issued to anybody that does not have a regular photo ID for some other purpose. Those would be provided free of charge.”
Greene County Auditor and Commissioner of Elections Jane Heun says they already a similar format with a scanner at each one of the polls.
“For faster and easier check-in, if you use your driver’s license or your voter ID card, it’s scanned and it pulls your information into the laptop in front of the poll worker for ease of identification and then further moving you along in the process.”
The bill is now in the Senate for consideration.
