The 2017 high school track & field season opens in Jefferson today with the Greene County Rams hosting the Greene County Coed Early Bird Meet. Starting time is 4:30 p.m. at Linduska Field in Jefferson. With the addition of the Sprint Medley Relay for boys (the girls already have it), the order of events for meets has changed. The Sprint Medley is first, followed by the girls’ 3,000 meter run and boys’ 3,200 meter run. The 4 x 800 meter relays are third, followed by the shuttle hurdle relays, then the 100 meter dash races.
Greene County boys’ head coach Dean Lansman told Raccoon Valley Radio having three events involving sprinters among the first five events on the track could change how some coaches put their lineup together. “I think the sprint medley will be a very exciting event and really sets the tempo for the start of a meet, but when putting the puzzle together to make out your lineup, you have to take a deeper look at who you want where with so many events using sprinters so early in a meet.”
The Rams are hoping to have a strong boys’ sprint medley with State experience returning in senior Nick Schroeder as a 400 meter relay runner last year, as well as fellow seniors Logan Lansman and Chase Stoline having run for the Rams at State a season ago on the 4 x 100 meter relay.
Greene County hosts boys’ teams from Paton-Churdan, Manson-Northwest Webster, CMB (Maxwell), South Hamilton (Jewell), and Winterset. The Rams host girls teams from CMB, M-NW, SH, Winterset, and Gilbert.
