One bill that continues to circulate in the Iowa legislature deals with voter identification.
District 10 Senator Jake Chapman says the bill ensures those who are registered to vote show identification at their polling place.
“We want to make sure that everyone that can vote legally has that opportunity to vote and we also want to make sure that no person’s vote is disenfranchised by someone’s fraudulent vote.”
The bill passed the House and Chapman points out that they made some changes to it. He says one of the major changes was expanding voting to 17 ½ year olds.
“If you are going to be 18 in the general election, we will allow you to also vote in the primary. We feel that if you’re going to be able to vote for that final candidate in the general election, you should also have a say in the primary election.”
Chapman adds that the bill is back in the House to consider their changes. If no agreement is made, then the bill goes into a conference committee. However Chapman believes the House will agree with their changes and send the bill to the governor to sign into law.
