Even though we are winding down National Nutrition Month in March, there are several tips and information that people can use throughout the year.

Hy-Vee Registered Dietitian Jocelyn Evans says this month’s theme is “Put Your Best Fork Forward” which focuses on taking small steps to change a person’s nutritional habits for the better.

“So I tell people write down what you’re eating. We know what we eat but sometimes it’s a little bit more eye-opening when we write it down. And then I always talk to people about snacking. People aren’t sure if it’s good to snack or not good to snack. But it can really be a helpful way to maintain weight.”

She adds that healthy snacks like trail mix with nuts and seeds, popcorn, dried fruit, cheeses and crackers are more beneficial.

“But when we are focusing on those nutritious or those nutrient-dense types of foods, we’re actually going to feel a little more full from those types of foods than you would something that might be just carb-based, which sometimes what we go to.”

She suggests pairing a protein like string cheese with a carbohydrate is what will keep you fuller longer and get you to the next meal.
