The Perry Lutheran Main Campus is getting set for their 2nd annual Meals From the Heartland event this Wednesday, April 5th .
The goal is to pack 22,000 meals over an 8 hour stretch Wednesday using close to 300 volunteers from the Perry community. The food has already been raised thanks to local donations and contributions from Meals from the Heartland Mollie Clark is helping organize the event and says volunteers are really needed to make this event successful.
“This is a really fun event and provides a great feeling when you see the magnitude of who we’re helping. We are looking for children over the age of 5 all the way up to senior citizens and everybody in between. Shifts will run in one hour segments with the day beginning at 9 am and wrapping up around 4 or 4:30.”
Once packaged, the food will be distributed all over the United States and specific Third World Countries in need. The event was a huge success last year and Clark says it certainly has a local, Perry feel to it.
“Randy McCauley helped get this going last year as a way to carry out the Lutheran Home’s mission. It turned out to be such a wonderful event and brought all aspects of the Perry community together ranging from children, to civic leaders and business partners. Everybody talked about how much they enjoyed it and that’s why we have such a good number of returning packers.”
Over 150 volunteers are still needed so stop by the Perry Lutheran Home or call 465-5342 to reserve your shift.
