It’s safe to say that golfing in April in the state of Iowa can be pretty challenging, and that especially rings true for central Iowa high school golf teams who have had to battle the cold, windy, and even rainy conditions to start the 2017 season.
Among those central Iowa teams tackling the elements would be the ADM Tiger girls and boys golf teams. They too have endured the crazy weather conditions through the first few meets yet despite all of that, the Tigers have set themselves apart by excelling in the less than ideal conditions. Both Tiger squads proved that this past Monday earning first place team finishes in their first respective conference triangulars of the season. Both teams won their meets by no less than nine shots over second place.
Certainly it seems as though the weather hasn’t been as much of a problem for the Tigers this year who have adopted head coach Kelly Roders philosophy that it’s all about the mindset.
“That’s one of the things I’v preached early on, everyone knows what spring is like here in Iowa. Beautiful sunny day when your not playing a meet and you’re going to get the windy, rainy weather when you are playing a meet. I’ve been trying to preach that to the kids that it’s just all about the mindset. It’s not only cold for you, it’s cold for everyone who’s playing that day so it evens the field out that way and whichever team is mentally tougher is going to be able to adapt to it and deal with it,” stated coach Roder.
It will be the Lady Tigers to get the next chance to take on the elements competitively when they head to Beaver Creek Golf Course this Thursday to battle it out in a one on one match with Dallas Center-Grimes.
