Greene County School Board 5_17The Greene County School Board met Wednesday in regular session.

The Board passed a 6 to 1 vote to start soccer next spring. A committee made up of school board members, community members, activities director and superintendent presented a budget for the first year. The proposed budget showed that through fundraising and volunteer coaches, all the expenses to start the program would be paid for. The lone “no” vote came from Dr. Mark Peters. His concern was about paying for the program in the 2019 fiscal year.

Superintendent Tim Christensen then presented a proposal for advertising through local media. He then recommended to the Board that they pursue trying to get information out to media without paying for it. The Board agreed with Christensen’s recommendation.

The Board then approved the second reading for a new policy on meal charges with one change. The change was made to increase the amount of free meals from two to six for a student if they reach zero on their meal account.

The Board then approved the 2017-18 administrative salaries and benefits as presented, the 2017-18 Region XII Council of Governments Western Iowa Transit System agreement, the 2017-18 registration fees, the 2017 baseball and softball list of officials, a Shive-Hattery proposal for $50,000 to repair a collapsing tunnel under the middle school and an agreement with RSVP 55+ to allow volunteers to read to elementary students with a background check conducted by the district.

The Board also heard a presentation from counselors Kyle Kinney and Teresa Skalla. Following the presentation, Kinney recommended to the Board to replace a resigning intermediate school position and place that position at the elementary school. The Board tabled their decision until they see financial figures and what their options are if a change were made.

Christensen also acknowledged all of the board members for their service during Iowa School Board Appreciation Month.
