Greene County High School student-athlete Kenna Marquardt received the Bernie Saggau Award, while Olivia Hansen and Nick Schroeder were named Female Ram of the Year and Male Ram of the Year last night at the annual Senior Awards Night.

The Saggau award is named after a former Executive Secretary of the Iowa High School Athletic Association. Some of the traits the recipient is to exhibit are honesty, integrity, character, high morals, good sportsmanship, and religion. Marquardt participated in volleyball, basketball, and track & field. She also held positions in student government and other organizations.

Hansen has been a State qualifier in track & field all four years of high school and was the top female cross-country runner the past three years for the Rams. She was on a top 10 cross-country team at the State Meet as a freshman.

Schroeder played a variety of sports in high school. For Greene County, he played football, where he was all-district the past two seasons, and he ran track in 2016 and ’17, where he was on State qualifying relays both seasons. Schroeder played soccer as a freshman and sophomore, and swam his first three years of high school, both for Boone, under an athletic sharing agreement. He was a top eight place winner at State in swimming as a junior.

The awards are athletic in nature, but character and leadership both on and off the field are considerations, as is academics. To receive the award, a student must be nominated by a Greene County head coach, and an anonymous committee makes the final selections.
