The summer reading program at the Perry Public Library will be starting soon, and the theme for this year is “Build a Better World.”
Youth Librarian Suzanne Kestel will be running the children’s program, and she explains, “It’s a universal theme we’re going with this summer. I go from birth through 5th grade. So any parents that have children of those ages, they are welcome to come in and sign them up. We’ve had people signing up already, so feel free to come in and do that.”
There will be four groups in the children’s summer reading program, each with their own name. Newborns through 2-year-olds are called the “Wee Wonders,” and they will meet every other Friday morning in June and July. The 3-5-year-olds are called the “Builders,” and they will meet mostly on Tuesday mornings, though they might get moved once in awhile. The Kindergarten-2nd graders are called “Creators,” and the 3rd-5th graders are called the “Designers.” To make it easy to tell when all the kids have sessions, they will be given a color-coded calendar.
In addition to the programs, they also have reading incentives. They will keep track of minutes, and the kids will receive prizes along the way. The goal is 60 hours over the two months, and those that make it to 60 will have their name put in for grand prizes, including lego kits and an overnight stay in the kids suite at Hotel Pattee.
The reading program will kick off this Saturday with KidsFest at the library.
