Greene County Supervisors 5_30The Greene County Supervisors met Tuesday.

During open forum, Sheriff Jack Williams discussed different options from the state, as far as recommendations for rules against guns inside county courthouses. The Supervisors agreed to allow the Iowa Supreme Court to establish a statewide ban on firearms in the courthouse judicial court space and wherever judicial business is being operated.

The Board then discussed fireworks under the new state law. Within the perimeters of when fireworks are allowed to be shot off, under the new law, the Supervisors are not allowed to require individuals to apply for a permit. However, they strongly encourage rural residents to do so as a courtesy for law enforcement in case a fire were to start.

The Board then approved the 2017 fiscal year budget amendments as presented, following a public hearing on the topic; the drainage district assessments for 2017, along with the six-percent waiver rate for drainage district work; and a $5,000 Louis Dreyfus funding request to the non-profit Lakeside Golf Club to jet their drainage tiles. Additionally, the Supervisors agreed to add the Bell Tower Community Foundation on their property insurance policy.

Finally, County Engineer Wade Weiss gave an update. He said all of the bells are now installed on top of the Mahanay Memorial Carillon Tower. However, he is going to address an issue with finishing the painting part of the project, because he feels the work on it isn’t to his satisfaction. The Board then agreed to have county employee Michelle Fields be the trainer for the use of the public keyboard inside the tower. The Board also agreed to pay $191,641 from the Bell Tower Community Foundation to the Verdin Company for work done on the bell tower.
