With the changes in fireworks law in Iowa, some local government bodies are discussing how to handle people shooting them off.
The Jefferson City Council discussed the topic at their last meeting in May, but decided to hold off on making any changes.
“Our current law reads that fireworks are not allowed to be shot off in town. That’s not going to change this year. What the state law did change, and we’re not going to challenging that at all, is that you can sell those types of fireworks that weren’t allowed before. I think it’s kind of a more wait and see and see how the law affects things before we move forward.”
That’s Jefferson City Administrator Mike Palmer.
As for the Greene County Supervisors, they discussed the topic at their meeting this past Tuesday. With the changes in the law, the Board can no longer require rural residents to obtain a permit to shoot off fireworks. However, they recommend that residents get a permit as a courtesy for law enforcement and area fire departments, so in case something does catch fire, they can respond quicker to the incident.
