Mahanay Bell TowerA major project to install 47 bells on top of the Mahanay Memorial Carillon Tower in Jefferson was recently completed, but now there’s another major project that has to be dealt with.

The 51-year-old structure is leaking water every time it rains. As per an agreement between the Greene County Supervisors and the Bell Tower Community Foundation, the Supervisors are in charge of maintenance and repairs to the tower. Supervisor Chair John Muir says it’s an issue they have to address soon.

“The last couple of years, we’ve really seen an expansion of water being present after a rain, to a point of confusion of where is that much water getting into the structure. There’s some coming through the roof area and we’re going to work at improving that. But we’ve kind of come to the conclusion where the seams are all the way up and down (the tower) there’s space there that water can seep through.”

At their May 22nd meeting, the Supervisors directed County Engineer Wade Weiss to contact Brooks, Borg and Skiles about subcontracting the work to re-water seal the entire bell tower to keep it from leaking water.
