Today several people will be shooting off fireworks to celebrate America’s independence.
Earlier this year, the Iowa legislature passed a law allowing commercial fireworks to be displayed on private property. The new state law allows for fireworks to be shot off between June 1st through July 8th and December 10th through January 3rd. Since Greene County doesn’t have a specific ordinance for the rural part of the county, Sheriff Jack Williams says rural residents have to abide by the new state law. He does ask for a courtesy call to the sheriff’s office.
“We would just ask that, if anything, just call and let us know that you’re lighting them. So that if we do have a complaint, we don’t have to go look. We can tell them who it is or who is lighting the fireworks and they let us know.”
Greene County Conservation Director Dan Towers tells Raccoon Valley Radio that fireworks are not allowed at any of the county parks or campgrounds.
Jefferson’s ordinance doesn’t allow for fireworks to be shot off. Police Chief Mark Clouse says City Ordinance 41.12 prohibits the sale and use of fireworks inside the incorporated city limits. Anyone wanting to set off fireworks within the city limits, must obtain a permit, which has to be approved by the City Council.
Clouse cautions anyone found using fireworks without a permit can be cited and fined up to $250.
