Last week, the Jefferson City Council made an appointment to fill a vacancy on the Council.

The Council appointed Matt Wetrich from ward two. City Administrator Mike Palmer explains the details with the appointment.

“This vacancy would be filled until the end of 2017. He’d have to run for re-election actually at the next general election for another two years beyond 2017 to fill this term. But, we’re real excited to have Matt on board.”

Palmer talks about one specific requirement that an interested individual will have to follow for the available seat in November’s general election.

“The last two-year term will have to come out of ward two because it does fill out Lisa Jaskey’s four-year term. But after that, everything will be at-large.”

Jaskey defeated Wetrich in the 2015 election. Jaskey then resigned from the Council in 2016, due to relocating to Texas. An election was then held to fill her vacancy last November and Dan Benitz defeated Wetrich and Kirk Hammer, who all ran for the vacant Council position. Benitz resigned earlier this year and instead of holding a special election, the Council appointed Wetrich to fill the seat until this November’s general election.
